Job Description

Aurora SRL is seeking a Research Scientist specialising in Quantum Electronics to join our growing R&D team. You will conduct cutting-edge research in quantum optics, photonics and advanced electronic systems, contributing to both fundamental research and applied technology development.

This position offers the opportunity to work at the frontier of quantum technologies within a dynamic research environment. You will design and execute experiments, publish scientific results and contribute to the development of next-generation quantum sensing and communication systems.

We are looking for someone with a strong physics or engineering background who is passionate about pushing the boundaries of quantum technology from laboratory research to real-world applications.

Responsibilities
  • Design, set up and conduct experiments in quantum optics, photonics or quantum electronic devices
  • Develop and characterise quantum sensors, single-photon detectors or quantum communication components
  • Perform theoretical modelling and numerical simulations to support experimental activities
  • Analyse experimental data using statistical methods and scientific computing tools
  • Prepare scientific publications, technical reports and patent applications
  • Contribute to research proposals for national and European funding programmes (Horizon Europe, ERC, PNRR)
  • Collaborate with academic partners, research centres and industrial stakeholders
  • Present results at international conferences and workshops
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, optical setups and measurement instrumentation
  • Mentor junior researchers and PhD students
Must-have Requirements
  • PhD or equivalent research experience in Physics, Quantum Electronics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one area: quantum optics, quantum sensing, photonics, laser physics or semiconductor quantum devices
  • Strong experimental skills: optical alignment, laser systems, cryogenic setups, vacuum systems or cleanroom fabrication
  • Proficiency in scientific programming: Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW or equivalent
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant journals
  • Excellent English (C1+); Italian is a strong plus
  • Ability to work independently and manage complex experimental workflows
Nice-to-have Requirements
  • Experience with quantum key distribution (QKD) or quantum random number generation
  • Knowledge of integrated photonics or silicon photonics fabrication
  • Familiarity with FPGA programming for data acquisition and instrument control
  • Experience with cryogenic systems or superconducting detectors (SNSPDs, TES)
  • Background in quantum computing hardware (trapped ions, superconducting qubits, photonic qubits)
  • Experience with funded research projects (EU, ESA, ASI, INFN)
  • Existing network within the European quantum technology community
Personal Requirements
  • Deep intellectual curiosity and passion for fundamental and applied research
  • Rigorous scientific methodology combined with creative problem-solving
  • Excellent team player who thrives in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments
  • Strong communication skills for both scientific and non-technical audiences
  • Resilience and persistence in the face of experimental challenges
  • Commitment to scientific integrity and reproducibility
